Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a little girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in the tenement area of poverty of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. However, she was only in school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges: in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime as an usherette. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
